- What is the difference between
the full day and the half day walks?
The Full Day Trip is a 7-8 hour trip suitable for people
with a good level of fitness and a sense of adventure. You
spend approximately 5-6 hours on the glacier exploring the
upper icefalls. The Half Day Trip is 3.5- 4 hours suitable
for people with an average fitness level. You spend 1 -
1.5 hours climbing and descending the pre-cut track on the
Terminal Face. The full day uses this track as well but
continues about 3 kilometres up the glacier and into two
icefalls for an additional four hours on the ice. You need
to have a higher level of fitness and agility to do the
full day. Both trips access the glacier on a 3 kilometre
walk along the river valley.
- If there is poor weather, is
the trip cancelled?
Not necessarily. We run half and full day trips in almost
all weather conditions. Extremely heavy rain can cancel
trips. This happens an average of 6 days out of the year,
so there is a slim chance it will happen on the day that
you want to walk. Heli-hikes only operate in clear, light
wind conditions.
- Do you run trips in winter?
We run trips everyday of the year. Please note that Christmas
Day has limited hours. Please contact us for further details.
- How cold is it?
The coolest it gets in winter would be 6 degrees celsius
although winter is generally the time for clear settled
weather. Spring and summer are traditionally the wet times
of year.
- Is the trip suitable for novices?
Yes, we cater for people who have never even seen snow or
ice! Please see trip guides for fitness requirements.
- Is the trip suitable for children?
The minimum age is 6 years. However, we find children under
10 years of age can sometimes struggle with the walk. If
you want to book younger children, we ask you come into
our office so we can meet the children and talk to them
about what is involved. The final decision on whether a
child does a walk rests with the guide. We rarely allow
children to participate in the Full Day Trip due to it's
strenuous nature.
- Where and when do I need to
check in for a walk?
We are located on the Main Road of Franz Josef (State Highway
6) next to the Mobil Gas Station. Check in times are 30
minutes prior to departure which are the times shown on
the trip guides.
- What should I wear/bring?
Please bring three layers of warm clothing for your upper
body (fleece, wool, thermal underwear) and lightweight trousers
(no jeans-they get wet and cumbersome). Bring a lunch if
doing the full day and a snack if doing the half day. Also,
bring a small bottle of water, sunglasses and sunscreen.
- Can I drink the water on the
glacier?
Yes, you can.
- What is provided?
We provide socks, Ice TalonzTM boots, Ice TalonzTM
(spikes), gloves, warm hats, a Goretex raincoat and either
an ice axe (full day and heli-hike) or walking poles (half
day).
- Can I use my own gear (boots,
socks, etc)?
The Ice TalonzTM (spikes) are designed to use
with our boots so you are required to use our boots. You
can use your own raincoat, gloves and socks but your feet
and raincoat could get wet. You can keep yours dry and use
ours. It's up to you!
- Are there any toilets on the
glacier?
In short, no! We advise that you go to the toilet before
you leave our office. If you do need to go to the toilet
whilst on a walk ask your guide and they should be able
to direct you to a suitable place. Please remember that
you are in a National Park, so any rubbish must be carried
out with you.
- How far are you from...
- Fox Glacier = 45 minutes
- Nelson = 6 hours
- Haast = 2 hours
- Christchurch = 5 hours
- Hokitika = 2 hours
- Wanaka = 4 hours
- Greymouth = 2.5 hours
- Queenstown = 5 hour
